Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - January 2010

Happy New Year everyone! We hope this will be the bestest, danceinest year ever for you all! First off, a reminder that this month is our Annual Meeting dance in which we elect officers for the remainder of the year. Please be sure to attend, cast your ballot, and let your voice be heard on any issue you wish to raise! This is your club! December turned out 45 of you seeking the magic of ballroom dancing. Unfortunately, yours truly was out with a case of bronchitis, but I am told it was a roaring affair and everyone went home with a smile on their face! Does it get any better than that? Our sincere thanks go to Pat and Coach Battino for managing the hosting table and keeping you wild bunch under control! What a great pair of folks, huh? Thanks also to Elaine for the meats, bread, and salad, to Debbie and Dennis for the fruit, to Ruthann for the cranberry salad, to Chris Sabo for those magnificent brownies, and to Yvonne for the cream cheese squares. Isn't it nice to know that you will always get a square meal to go with your night out! Also, special thanks to Yvonne for donating an afghan (which she made) and to Jack and Patricia for donating the 5 packs of flower bulbs as door prizes! And thanks again to Elaine for obtaining the Santa door prize. Unfortunately, we can't remember who won the seven prizes, but you all know who you are, so congratulations! Thanks also to Dennis for the lesson in the Bolero - we'll do that again! It is coming up on that time of the year for our annual meeting and election of Officers for this year. Please be thinking about how you can help to make your dance club even better. Maybe you can find a way to spend a little of your time to help manage an activity where people come just to have fun. Wouldn't that be a great way to give back to the club? This is our standard reminder of the Dues and Fees required by the By Laws. We are now accepting Annual Dues ($10.00/person) for 2010. Why don't you just include your 2010 dues in with your dance fee for this month, and then you won't have to think about it for a whole year! Please include a note that your Annual Dues are included so we get it accounted for correctly. Thanks a whole bunch! Member Dance Fees are $10.00 per person and Non-Member Dance Fees are $12.00 per person. All Dance Fees are due 1 week prior to the dance. It is most important that Dance Fees be paid on time so that we can accurately judge the amount of food and drink to purchase for the dance. Please do your best to help us out with this one. Thanks! The prospective dates for 2010 dances are: February 27, March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, August 28. The dates for the September through December dances will be dependent on the Clemson football schedule and will be published when those dates are known. Mark your calendars! We don't want anyone to miss out because they can't find us! The dance location is Zion United Methodist Church, 5708 Highway 187 North, Activity building. Hwy 187 runs between Hwy 76 (near Pendleton) and Hwy 24 (intersection that goes to Portman Marina.) From the Hwy 76 intersection with 187 (at the Milliken Plant) proceed South 4.2 miles to Church on the left. From Hwy 24, proceed North across I-85 and from there the Church is about 1.5 miles on the right.

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - February 2010

The skies darkened, weather people warned of impending ice, and it was a dreary, chilly night that greeted 43 brave souls with dancin' on their minds!  It turned out to be a magnificent evening, lots of fun and laughs, and a little ballroom dancing too - but then, how could you not have fun with such a wonderful group of people!  For those of you who didn't make it, we understand erring on the side of being safe, but I must say you missed a DOOZIE!
Gracious Thanks to our Hosts/Greeters this month, Wayne and Yvonne Conover - they did a super job getting everyone checked in and started them all off with a smile on their faces!  Thanks to Elaine and George for the majority of the delicious buffet; to Dennis and Debbie for the fruit platter; and Chris Sabo for those famous brownies!  You all are the best cooks this side of Iowa!  Thanks to Dennis for the music and for a very cool step in the Bolero.  Isn't that a smooth dance?  And a special Thanks! to all of you who come early to set it up and stay late to take it down.  We appreciate all your efforts!

Did you notice what a fantastic job our hosts, Chris Sabo and Sam Hammond, did at the greeting table?  We're sure glad they are always here to help out; and, Chris made those delicious brownies again!  Thanks you two!  Huge thanks to all you other folks who put together that great buffet and supplied those tasty desserts - that would be Elaine, Ruthann, Debbie, Yvonne, Chris, and Nancy.  Professionals all - Thanks!  Thanks also go to Dave and Mariel Dumin for donating the recipe book for a door prize, and to the inimitable Jack and Patricia DeVroomen for the flower bulb door prizes.  Thanks to you all!
Special Thanks go to members Wayne and Yvonne Conover for providing an excellent lesson in a syncopated waltz step, which we all will be doing like professionals in the near future as a testament to our instructors!  Lets see...was that 1 and 2, 3 or 1, 2, and 3?  Dennis provided another set of perfectly danceable music CDs for our pleasure.  Thanks Dennis!
During the break, Dennis reminded everyone of the covered dish dance in May.  Here's how it works folks:  If you are a member, bring a covered dish and get in free; If you are not a member, bring a covered dish and get in for $5.00 per person.  Members or non-members without a dish pay the regular dance fee.  Join up quickly!  Dennis also announced that if you have a favorite song you would like to have in our repertoire, please let us know and we will do our best to get it.
The pictures of all those lucky folks who won the door prizes are on the web site for your viewing pleasure.  Congratulations to you all!
This is our standard reminder of the Dues and Fees required by the By Laws.  Your Annual Dues ($10.00/person) for 2010 are now due.
Thanks!
The prospective dates for 2010 dances are:  June 26, July 24, August 28, September 25, October 30, November 20, and December TBD.  Mark your calendars!

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - June 2010

No, it wasn't the Cordon Bleu Institute in Paris;  nor the Culinary Institute of America in New York;  but neither of those locales had any better food than our covered dish buffet on Saturday last!  You all are magnificent cooks - I just couldn't help myself as I went through the line and sampled everything!  And, I was not alone, as a total of 45 of us had a superb meal followed by scrumptious desserts, and then some really fun ballroom dancing.  I just can't think of a finer way to spend an evening out!  You all are an amazing group of goods friends!  Thanks to all of you who supplied that wonderful meal!  We also give special recognition to our friend Elaine who coordinated this entire effort - THANKS Elaine!
We also recognize with sincere appreciation, Eugene and Margaret Dickert, our hosts for the evening - no finer pair of personable, welcoming people exist!  Thanks you two!  Thanks also to Bill and Linda Forrest for donating the Olive Garden gift certificate as a door prize!  Thanks to Elaine (once again) for obtaining the beach towels door prize!  Dennis provided another set of perfectly danceable music CDs for our pleasure.  Thanks Dennis!

July

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - July 2010

Once again you all have outdone yourselves!  An enthusiastic 47 of you came out to learn a new Salsa step, enjoy a buffet meal with your friends, and comport yourselves with the demeanor of a diplomat on the dance floor!  How can I be so lucky to have so many nice friends, who also love to dance?
In my wanderings on the internet, I occasionally come across a piece of information which may be of use to all of us.  The following is one of those subjects that is so well diagrammed, that I felt compelled to put it in the newsletter.  Many times we have discussed foot positions, particularly the infamous 5th position break!  Well, here they are, well diagrammed for you to study and memorize!  Now, when someone ask you about the 5th position, you will know exactly what it is! Please travel to this link:  http://ballroomdancers.com/Learning_Center/Technique/Foot_Positions/
Speaking of diplomats, Many Thanks to our Hosts for the evening, Pat and Coach Battino!  They just don't come in pairs any better than Pat and Coach!  And wow, on the food front we once again send Sincere Thanks to Elaine and George, Debbie, Ruthann, Chris Sabo, and Lou Rainey for providing a magnificent buffet that ensured no one would go away hungry!  You all are the greatest!  Thanks again to Jack and Patricia for donating two packages of bulbs for door prizes, Thanks to Jacques DeHoudt for donating the Belgian place mats for door prizes, and Thanks to Elaine for obtaining the crystal dancers statue for a door prize!  Super Thanks to Frank and Chris Hanak for a superb lesson in basic Salsa! - I don't know about you, but this may be easier than I thought.
At the break, Dennis reminded us of the need for volunteers to Host the dances in August, September, November, and December.  OK you all, how about putting on your helper hats and signing up for one of these months?  Thanks!
Dennis also reminded us of our weekly get together dance at the Anderson Senior Solutions, every Wednesday at 6:30.  Great fun for a dollar!
The bags of bulbs were won by Debbie Adams and Jeremy Schmutz; The placemats were won by Barbara Budreau and Peggy Ivey: and the statue was won by Mariel Dumin.  Congratulations to you all!  Someone noted that all of the winners were sitting in the same half of the room - the "fix" must have been in!

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - August 2010

The simmering Summer temperatures didn't stop 43 of you from attending the July dance soiree!  Another great turnout and some really fun dancing for a hot July evening - good food, and good friends - what else do we need?
A Hearty Thank You goes to our hosts for the evening Wayne and Yvonne Conover - if you don't know this pair you are missing out on a wonderful friendship!  Thanks you two!
How about that buffet!  Thanks to Debbie, Ruthann, Lou, Margaret, Frank and Chris for all that really delicious food!  I did not go away hungry, and no, it was not low-cal!
Dennis gave us a very interesting step to practice in the Waltz, and also provided all that good, danceable music for the night.  Thanks Dennis!
During the break, everyone was reminded of the need for Hosts for the September dance - help us out here folks!  Also, Dennis reminded everyone of the dollar-a-person Wednesday night dance at Senior Solutions in Anderson.  Just show up with your money at about 6:00PM and enjoy some dancing for a couple of hours!  You even get a free lesson!
Now, you can tell that Elaine is out of town, because in our efforts to put on a good spread of food for you all, we completely forgot the door prize.  So, the door prize became a get in free dance night for a lucky couple - and that would be our friends and great supporters of this club, Linda and Bill Forrest.  Congratulations, and see you at the dance!  Elaine - hurry back!  Oh, and did you notice that the winners were at the opposite end of the room from last month?
Several people have asked about the web site.  Everything you ever wanted to know about the club, and then some, is there.  Every photo taken since dance one is on the site, along with every newsletter.  The address is www.gcbdc.com or if you like to type, www.goldencornerballroomdanceclub.com!  Check it out!

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter - September 2010

Wow!  You all really like to dance, don't you?  We counted 51 of you at the August dance making it another super turn out of good friends, great music, and just a whole lotta' fun!  If you missed out this month, try to make it in September!
Could you also not help but smile when you were greeted by our good friends, Roy and Peggy Ivey?  What a really nice way to start the evening!  Thanks you two for doing the yeoman's work at the hosting table!
Thanks go to Elaine, Debbie, Ruthann, Chris Sabo, Yvonne, and Margaret for providing all that tasty food and dessert!  Did you all go to a chef's institute?  Magnificent stuff, and all lo-cal!
Thanks also to our friends Jack and Patricia for donating an elephant ear plant door prize!  Thanks also to Dennis for giving us a very danceable lesson in the Bolero - what a step!
At the end of our meal, we made a surprise cake presentation to a "special" friend, Patricia DeVroomen, who is taking the US Citizenship oath as this is being written!  Congratulations Patricia, and welcome to the BIG American Club!  We are proud of you and very happy for you!
During the break, there was no significant business to discuss.  We would like to remind you all of the dollar-a-person Wednesday night dance at Senior Solutions in Anderson.  Just show up with your money at about 6:00PM and enjoy some dancing for a couple of hours.  You even get a free lesson and help in general for whatever step you are working on!  The two lucky door prize winners were Coach Battino - the $30.00 gift certificate to Longhorn Steak House, and newcomer Jim Forrester - the elephant ear plant.  Congratulations to you both!  I don't know much about plants Jim, but if Coach asks me to help him eat some steak, I'm in!
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT - We are finalizing plans for the New Year Eve catered dinner/dance in December.  What we can tell you now is that the cost will be $15.00 per person and we will need for you to be signed up to attend, and pay the dance fee not later than the November 20th dance.  A sign-up sheet will be available on the host's table at the September thru November dances.  Dinner will begin at 8PM sharp, and the dance music will play until 12 midnight.  Sparkling cider will be served to celebrate the New Year.  This will be a meal, and event, more than worthy of 2011!  Start planning now to attend!    Watch for a SPECIAL NOTICE with all the details coming to you in September.

December

Hello Dancers!

GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUB
Newsletter – December 2010

Every so often life throws in a pleasant surprise just to keep things interesting.  This time it was the November dance.  Fifty eight (that’s 58!) of you showed up to the great pleasure of all of us, and the muse Terpsichore!  Remember her?  Thanks to all of you good friends for making it such a wonderful affair!
The pleasantry of the evening started right at the Hosts table with Bob and Cheryl Carlisle performing the greeting and sign in chores with gracious aplomb.  Thanks to you both for being such fine friends of our club – we really appreciate your efforts!
And, once again our gourmet chefs put together a buffet table fit for all you Kings and Queens!  Special THANKS to Elaine and George, Debbie and Dennis, Chris Sabo, Aggie and Harry, and Doug and Joan.  Another wonderful job putting together all that good food and desserts!  THANKS also go to those magnificent folks who thought of, and donated, door prizes – Elaine, Larry and Barbara, Jack and Patricia, and Dennis - where did we find all of you good people?  More THANKS to Dennis for the evening music selections and for providing us with a really cool step in the Rumba!  Lets see....step together step?
The centerpiece was won by Barbara Budreau, the wine went to Wayne Conover, the Christmas scarf found a home with Sandy Busch, and the bulb packets were shared between Lou Rainey, Joyce Robinson, and Yvonne Conover; congratulations to all the winners!
And in the congratulations department, we want to wish our good friend, Harry Buie, HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY!
At the break Dennis reminded everyone that this was the deadline for signing up, and paying for, the New Years Eve dance next month.  The response has been great!  The number is 63!  If you missed out, there is always the next month!  Dennis also reminded us of the USA Dance Christmas Dance to be held at Augusta Manor (see below for details.)  He also asked for volunteers to sign up to be Hosts at our monthly dances next year.  The proposed dates are now listed later in this newsletter.  Dennis reminded us that the annual election of Board Members will take place in January and asked people to be thinking about how they can help out their club.
The dates for 2011 dances are:  January 29, February 26, March 26, April 30, May 21, June 25, July 23, August 27.  Mark your calendars!  The September through December dance dates are dependent upon the Clemson football schedule and will be announced once those dates are known.
We don't want anyone to miss out because they can't find us!  The dance location is Zion United Methodist Church, 5708 Highway 187 North, Activity building.  Hwy 187 runs between Hwy 76 (near Pendleton) and Hwy 24 (intersection that goes to Portman Marina.)  From the Hwy 76 intersection with 187 (at the Milliken Plant) proceed South 4.2 miles to the Church on the left.  From Hwy 24, proceed North across I-85 and from there the Church is about 1.5 miles on the right.

Next Dance – Friday, December 31

Those who are coming have already paid their non-refundable dance fee, so we will just remind you that the catered dinner service will start at 8PM sharp.  Dance music will play through midnight, and sparkling cider will be provided to celebrate the New Year.  Dress is formal/semi-formal/dressy casual.  You all will look great in anything!
