Happy New Year Dancers!
GOLDEN CORNER BALLROOM DANCE CLUBNewsletter - January 2009
I ran across the following quote by H. Jackson Brown, Jr., the author of "Life's Little Instruction Book" and thought it was appropriate for our club and for the beginning of a new year:
What a wonderful time forty five of us had dancing with opportunity at the December covered-dish dance! I sincerely hope that each of you get a chance to come out to our dances this year and take advantage of a spin around the dance floor with opportunity!
A HUGE Thank You to all of you who furnished such delicious dishes of food for the December dance! It was a gourmet's delight to sample all of that beautiful food on the serving table. Thank You All for making it a wonderful evening, and a Special Thanks to Elaine for coordinating all the food contributions!
Thank You to Bill and Donna Allgood for a great job at the greeting table - and they looked really spiffy too! Super Thanks to Jack and Patricia DeVroomen for donating the plant bulbs for door prizes, and to Loomcraft of Belton for donating the afghans!
During the break, Dennis reminded us that the election and installation of club officers will take place at the January dance. If you intend to stand for any office (other than President), please let one of the current Board members know.
We still need Hosts for the 2009 dances - please sign up on the sheet at the greeting table!
Please note that the April 2009 dance has been changed to the 24th, vice the 25th. Please note this change on your calendar!
It is now time for you to re-new your membership and pay your yearly dues of $10.00 per person. Please, please send in your dues now!
The afghan door prizes were won by Chris Sabo and Steve Hayasaka, and the four packages of bulbs were won by Sam Hammond, Lee Halleck, George Fullbright, and Mariea Kautter. Congratulations to you all!
This is our standard reminder of the Dues and Fees required by the By Laws. Annual dues are $10.00 per person payable in January. It would be really helpful to us if you pay your 2009 dues now - Thanks!. Member Dance Fees are $10.00 per person and Non-Member Dance Fees are $12.00 per person. All Dance Fees are due 1 week prior to the dance. It is most important that Dance Fees be paid on time so that we can accurately judge the amount of food and drink to purchase for the dance. Please do your best to help us out with this one. Thanks!
The prospective dates for 2009 dances are: February 28, March 28, April 24, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 22. Dance dates for Sept-Dec will be published when the Clemson football schedule is known. Mark your calendars!
For each dance event, the lesson starts at 6:30PM, food and drinks at 7:00, and music for dancing from 7:30 until 10:00PM.
We don't want anyone to miss out because they can't find us! The dance location is Zion United Methodist Church on Highway 187. Hwy 187 runs between Hwy 76 (near Pendleton) and Hwy 24 (intersection that goes to Portman Marina.) From the Hwy 76 intersection with 187 (at the Milliken Plant) proceed South 4.2 miles to Church on the left. From Hwy 24, proceed North across I-85 and from there Church is about 1.5 miles on the right.
Dance Fees Due - January 17
Please send your member Dance Fee of $10.00 per person; or non-member fee of $12.00 per person; check payable to "Golden Corner Ballroom Dance Club" (you may wish to shorten the payee to GCBDC which is perfectly acceptable to the bank, and saves a whole lot of writing!) to:

Townville, SC 29689
How about sending that check in right now while it is on your mind? Don't forget your annual dues!
If you would prefer to just let us know that you are going to be there and then pay at the door, please send a note to Chris (Email Chris H) to that effect so we can count you in the food and drink calculation.
Be sure to invite your friends to join us for an enjoyable evening of ballroom dancing.

We hope to see you there!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - February 2009
I ran across the following quote and was taken by both its humor and absolute truth:
If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance!Forty-six of you followed your Muse and took a chance at the January dance. You weren't disappointed! It was a befitting occasion to mark the beginning of our fourth year as a club. Can you believe it has been three years already? How time flies when you are having fun, and you all make this about as "fun" as it gets!
This was also our annual meeting/election dance. The results of that activity are reported below. Thank you all for turning out to support our club and enjoy the magic!
Our Host and Hostess for the evening were Lee Halleck and Nancy Jerolamon, and they did a marvelous job of greeting everyone and getting them checked in! Thank you both, very much! Thanks to Elaine (and George), Debbie (and Dennis), Chris Sabo, and Ruthann for their culinary contributions. It was a fine table of "vittles" for our hungry, dancing crew! Thanks to Dennis for the lesson in the Waltz, and for also providing the music for the evening! Thank You to Jack and Patricia DeVroomen for their contribution of two bags of flower bulbs for door prizes! I would guess our dancers have the best looking flower beds in the Upstate!
During the break, we announced the new hours for JT's Ballroom dancing - 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month, starting in February. The entry/door charge has been reduced back to $7.00/person.
We also pleaded for additional people to volunteer to be greeting table hosts for July through December. Please help us out by signing up on the sheet at the greeting table at the next dance. Thanks!
The annual meeting was called to order. We reported an approximate treasury balance of $3600.00. There was no old business to discuss. The only new business was the election of officers for 2009. A motion was made to elect the slate of unopposed candidates by acclamation. There was no discussion, the motion was seconded from the floor, and was carried unanimously by voice vote. A motion was made to adjourn the annual meeting, it was seconded from the floor, and approved unanimously by voice vote. The Board of Directors for 2009 are as follows:
| Name | Position | Phone | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dave Thomas | President | 885-0555 | Email Dave |
| Dennis Adams | Vice-President | 226-7674 | Email Dennis |
| Chris Hanak | Treasurer | 287-3928 | Email Chris H |
| Chris Sabo | Secretary | 332-0642 | Email Chris S |
| Elaine Fullbright | Activities Chair | 225-7922 | Email Elaine |
| Sam Hammond | Ext. Affairs Chair | 276-1967 | Email Sam |
The Music Committee Chair function is shared by Dennis and Dave.
I want to pause here to reflect on the fine people who volunteer month-after-month and year-after-year to guide the club, gather information, keep track of the money, organize and purchase food and drink, cook, and help set it up on dance day; and then take it all down again when the dance has ended. It is not possible to get your arms wrapped around so much giving! I am proud to be associated with such a caring group of people, and truly happy to call them all my friends! Thank You!!
Not discussed at the dance is a need for a volunteer with computer graphics artist capability to help out with the design of the Club web site. We really need someone who understands how to use color and images to make our pages appealing and pleasant to view. If you are that person, please contact Dave Thomas to discuss how you can help us get it done. Thanks!
Please note that the April 2009 dance has been changed to the 24th, vice the 25th. Please note this change on your calendar!
The $30.00 gift certificate to Longhorn Steakhouse was won by Roy Ivey, and a bag each of flower bulbs was won by both George Fullbright and Kathy Hayasaka! Congratulations all three! I don't know which is more fun: eating steak, or planting bulbs...hummmm?
It is now time for you to re-new your membership and pay your yearly dues of $10.00 per person. Please, please send in your dues now and avoid being delinquent on 1 March!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - March 2009
Ballroom dancing comes and goes out of style, but there is always ballroom dancing. New fads may come and go like Dirty Dancing, the Macarena, and Lambada, but ballroom dancing is always there. When it seems like the whole world is doing a particular Fad dance, Ballroom dancing is still there. People dancing together will always be popular.
One could see the truth of that paragraph from the attendance of 55 of you at our monthly dance last Saturday! I am always so very pleased to see the smiles and enthusiasm on display at a Golden Corner dance! You all are truly GREAT friends! Lets don't ever stop doing this....
Hosting this month were the Budreaus, Larry and Barbara - They make welcoming so darned smooth and easy! Thanks to both of you!
In the food department we did pretty doggone good too, thanks to many of you! Debbie and Dennis for all that chicken and other goodies (you two are always on the front lines!), Bill Forrest for the cole slaw (oh my, but it was good!), Chris Sabo for the brownies (she is the Queen of brownies), Ruthann for the pecan bars (a jillion calories each!), Peggy Ivey for the chocolate cake (magnificently delicious!), and Margaret Dickert for the pound cake which was given as a door prize(and which weighed way more than a pound!) Huge, Sincere Thanks! to each of you for being so thoughtful - and being a good cook helps too! Thanks too to all of you who helped us to set it up and then take it down at the evening's end. You all give volunteer a good name!
Dennis provided us with another super lesson in the Foxtrot - I hope you all got a chance to practice it during the evening. Thanks Dennis!
During the break it was noted that we still need volunteers to host at each of the September through December dances. Won't you please give up just a little of your time to take on this important task? The dates for those dances have now been determined and are published in bold in this newsletter. There is now no excuse for not signing up - c'mon folks! Thanks!
It was suggested that we make the Christmas dance a "dress up" affair. The Board will consider this suggestion.
Thanks to the suppliers of our three door prizes, Margaret Dickert for the brown sugar pound cake, and Loomcraft of Belton for 2 afgans. The cake was won by Ashley Couch - Now Ashley, you are so fashionably thin, if you eat that whole cake it will double your weight! Share! One afgan was won by Lisa McGee and the other was won by Elizabeth Hoffman. You two got those just in time for the big snowstorm of the year! What timing! Congratulations to all of you!
It is now past time for you to re-new your membership and pay your yearly dues of $10.00 per person. Please, please send in your yearly dues now and avoid being delinquent on 1 March!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - April 2009
The March dance proved to be one of those magnificent evenings filled with fantastic friends, wonderful music, great food and drink, and interesting conversation. It brings to mind this quote from William James "Wherever you are, it's your friends who make your world." This was no truer than on Saturday last when 62 of you came seeking the magic of ballroom dancing and ended up making a beautiful world for your friends! You all are truly classy people!
We have lots of folks to thank for making it a successful dance evening. Have you ever been welcomed any better than the enthusiastic job done by Ken and Wanda Whitener? What a pleasure to have you two as a part of our club! Thanks! Thanks to Elaine, George, Debbie, Ruthann, and Patty for a sumptuous spread on the food table! It is always so (lets have seconds!) delicious! Thanks to Peggy Ivey for the raspberry cake, and Chris Sabo for the brownies - are there better dessert cooks anywhere? Thanks to Dennis for a really interesting, and dressy step in the Rumba, and for providing the dance music for the evening. Great work by all! Thanks also to all of you unnamed heroes who help set it up, and then take it down at the end of the evening! We are proud to call you friends!
On the announcement front, the club web site is now up and running. Please go to www.gcbdc.com and have a look. Your creative suggestions on how to improve it are solicited! Please send your comments to Dave via the link at the site.
Please - Please - Pretty Please - we still have three open hosting months at the end of the year. Just sign up at the next dance so I can shut up about this!
Patricia DeVroomen is acting in "The Misanthrope" at the Greenwood Community Theater, April 2-5. See their web site for particulars.
The March dance was the deadline for paying your Annual Dues to qualify for the free-to-members catered dinner/dance in April. Because of the space requirements for the caterer, there will be no lesson at the April dance. Plan to arrive at around 6:45PM. Now here is the important part - we must know how many of you are coming so we can give the caterer an accurate count. As you know, we don't want to pay for too much food, and we also don't want to run out. So folks, please make a sincere effort to let Chris know that you will be there. Email Chris While we are on this subject, just let me gently remind you that it is important for all of our dances that you let us know in advance that you will be there! Lastly, the cost of this dinner/dance to non-members is $20/person. The same advance notification caveat applies. THANKS!
The door prize, a $30.00 gift certificate to Red Lobster was won by Mariea Kautter. Ahhh, lobster and clarified butter - cholesterol city - but oh so good! Congratulations Mariea!
This is our standard reminder of the Dues and Fees required by the By Laws. Annual dues are $10.00 per person payable in January. Your 2009 Annual Dues are now really late! It is most important that Dance Fees be paid on time so that we can accurately judge the amount of food and drink to purchase for the dance. Please do your best to help us out with this one. Thanks!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - May 2009
The April free-to-members dinner/dance drew a crowd of 59 willing steppers who enjoyed a catered buffet dinner followed by a very enjoyable evening of dancing and conversation. Ballroom dancing never loses that ole' magic, does it folks? We owe a HUGE Thanks to Elaine for arranging the majority of the food for this event, and we want you to know Elaine that we all appreciate your efforts! Thanks! As a result of the friendly demeanor of our Hosts for the evening, Chris Sabo and Sam Hammond, everybody started off with a smile on their faces and it got better from there. Big Thanks to Chris and Sam! Thanks also to George, Dennis, Debbie, Chris and Frank Hanak, and Ruthann for all their help in getting the facilities set up before the dance. Thanks also to those of you who helped to get the food area cleaned up after the meal so we could quickly get to the all-important dancing! You all know who you are, and you know that we appreciate your help - I am really proud to be associated with all you nice folks!
Special Thanks to Margaret Dickert for donating that home-made Angel Food cake for a door prize! If Margaret had a hand in the making, you know it is gooood!
During the break, Dennis reminded us that the web site is up and running: www.gcbdc.com Take a look and let us know what you think! Ideas are solicited!
The Angel Food cake was won by Elena Cosby - if you need help eating it Elena we know several volunteers! The Longhorn gift certificate was won by Evelyn Watkins - you know what I say Evelyn, the worst beef is always better than the best chicken - and you can bet that Longhorn will be the best beef! Congratulations to you both!
Many of us were still dancing right up until the 10PM end of the evening. What a great time! Lets do this again next month!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - June 2009
Here we are gliding smoothly out of Spring into Summer. Usually this is an event marked by the passing of the Memorial Day Holiday weekend and our national honoring of all those who gave their lives so we can enjoy our freedoms. We are truly a great and blessed country! Oh yes, and we have to wait one more year to see if Danica can become the first woman to win the Indy 500!
Speaking of races, 49 of you accelerated into the May dance, made a stop at the pit row buffet, and spun out on the dance floor! What a super evening it was, beginning with another quality lesson, this time in the Rumba, from Dennis! Thanks Dennis, and thanks for providing the dance music for the evening! Thanks also to the preparers, purchasers, cooks, and helpers who provided all that delicious food for the evening - Ruthann, Dave, Dolores, Debbie, Dennis, Chris Sabo, and Margaret Dickert! HooRah to all of you for the tasty layout! If you went away hungry you know whose fault that was! Thanks to Paul and Lydia for beginning the Hosting Table operations, and then for swapping with Bob and Cheryl so they can go on a trip. You four prove once again why I always say that we have the very nicest people in our club! You all help to keep the magic going. Thanks again to Jack and Patricia for donating 3 packages of lily bulbs, and one HUGE elephant ear bulb as door prizes! You all don't forget to check out the Marlboro Bulb Company for your planting needs - it is linked on the dance club web site!
Thanks again to all of you who helped to set it all up and then take it all down at the end of the evening.
It is also time for a little "Special" recognition. You know, there are always those dedicated folks who work quietly behind the scenes, but whose contributions make a huge difference in our success as a club. Four of those people (our good friends!) are Chris and Frank Hanak, and Chris Sabo and Sam Hammond. Chris H. is the focal point for all of our money transactions (a really important job) and for getting as accurate a count as possible for purchasing the correct amount of food and drink. Right alongside her is Frank, always helping to get us set up for the evening. Right in the middle of that mix is Sam, who provides all of the external activities info in the newsletter, but also is a huge help in getting the dances organized, and up and running; and Chris S. doing her club secretary chores, cooking those delicious brownies, and also helping (every dance!) to get us off to a good start. I am so very privileged to have you all as my friends! A HUGE Sincere Thanks from all of the club for your efforts on our behalf!
During the break there was no club business to discuss. The lily bulb door prizes were won by Debbie Adams, Donna Allgood, and Chris VanGeison; Coach Battino won the elephant ear bulb, and Nedra Hohl won the $30.00 gift certificate to the Galley restaurant at Portman Marina. Congratulations all! Dennis announced that immediately after the break we would be trying a Samba line dance taught by Chris Hanak, with a little help from Frank! It was a kick! If you didn't make it this month, do your best to get here next month because it will be just as much fun!

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - September 2009
Since our lesson last dance was the Cha Cha, I found this excerpt from the internet to be interesting - I hope you do too.
If you watch professional ballroom contests, you will notice the bright, skimpy outfits donned by the female dancers when the Mambo, Rumba or Cha Cha comes around. Throughout Latin cultures color is used more daringly than in others. Bright reds, pinks and oranges just make the dance more dynamic and it would not seem right without these bright colors. The music throughout Cha Cha history is fun and exciting. Most people listen to Cha Cha inspired music and do not even know it. A good example of this would be the "Hustle" danced by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.
Fifty five hustlin' folks appeared at the last dance to capture some more of that ballroom magic! It surely was a most enjoyable evening, spent with a lot of truly great people! Thanks for showing up!
Speaking of thanks, there are again several folks who deserve more than having their names mentioned in this newsletter for all the work they do for the club! Huge !THANKS! to Debbie for the chicken and fruit, Elaine for the slaw, chips, dessert, and door prize, Chris Sabo for the brownies, Ruthann for the peach pie, Mike Reh and Nancy Troxell for the Boston creme pie and German chocolate cake (did each of you bake one, or did one bake both?), Helen Sigmund for donating the mugs and tea for door prizes, and last, but far from least, our friends and avid club supporters Jerry and Sandy Busch for doing a magnificent job at the hosting table! You all are perfect examples of what friends are!
Thanks to Dennis for another insightful lesson, this time in Cha Cha. How does he remember all this stuff? Many thanks to all of you who helped to set it up, and then take it all down again at the end of the evening. You are appreciated!
Dennis reminded us at the break of the upcoming covered dish dance in September. Remember members, bring a dish, and get in free! Non-members, bring a dish and get in for only 5 bucks each! If you haven't had a chance to sign up for your dish to bring, please contact Elaine, or any one of the club officers, and we will let you know what we need.
Bobby and Penny Brady also want us all to know about a West-Coast Swing dance workshop sponsored by USA Dance on Saturday, August 29. The location is Augusta Manor, 1004 Augusta St., Greenville, SC. Workshop 2:30PM to 6PM - $35.00 and Dance 7:30PM to 11PM - $15.00. Contact susan@upstate-usadance.org, or Jim Cervenak at 864-382-1611.
Doug Shier won the glass dancers figurine, and Lee Halleck won the travel mugs and tea. Congratulations to you both!
The September dance schedule is 6:30PM set-up, 6:45PM dinner, 7:30PM to 10PM dance. There will be no dance lesson in September.

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - October 2009
I sat down here to write a short history of the world, but decided against that since I don't know yet how it ends! I missed out on another great dance evening with you all - that is the last time this year, I hope. Here are the particulars:
Fifty-one of you came out to participate in the magic of ballroom dancing, and I am sure you weren't disappointed!
Sincere THANKS to Eugene and Margaret Dickert for doing a superb job at the hosting table - isn't it great to see their smiling faces when you come through the door? Thanks to all of you who brought all of that variety of delicious food (man I hated to miss out on that!) to feed our hungry folks. I am told it was magnificent! Special THANKS again to Jack and Patricia DeVroomen for donating daffodil bulbs for our door prize! Thank you Elaine for managing all of the food lists and Dennis for providing an evening of wonderful dance music. And as always, Thank You to all of you who helped to set it up and then clean up afterwards - you are dedicated folks who I like to call my friends!
The bulbs prize was won by Lee Halleck, and the "Couple gets in free pass" was won by Frank Hanak - Congratulations to you both! Since you can't tiptoe through the tulips, maybe you can Rumba through the Daffodils! I know, it doesn't match, but I couldn't think of a dance step that begins with "D".

Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - November 2009
Let me start off on a serious note this month. You will note that there is no listing in the "Out and About" section for JTs this month. I am sorry to report that Jimmy and Janice have decided to take a break from Tuesday night ballroom dancing for the foreseeable future. We hope that they will change their minds real soon and re-open their doors to us on Tuesday evenings. And, when they do, we need to show up in greater numbers to show them how much we appreciate them! Speaking of showing up, it has come to our attention that the Foothills Dance Society has fallen on some tough times and really needs to generate some support for their dances. If you can spare a few dollars to give this club a try I am sure you will not be disappointed! They hold their dances at the Keowee Key Country Club in Seneca, and it is a coat and tie affair. Call Jordan Purvis at 864-944-8092 for details.
OK - We sure had lots of room on the dance floor at our last dance and we also had scads of fun! Although only 30 of you showed up for the magic of ballroom, it was as much fun as if 70 of you were there! Those of you who didn't make it can catch up with us at the next dance! How 'bout it?
Huge Thanks! to Heidi Giezey and Michael Brittain for deftly managing the hosting for the hordes of people streaming through the front doors! It is always nice to be greeted by a sincere "Welcome to the dance."
Special thanks to Dennis for getting the main dishes and dessert, Ruthann for the fruit tray, and Chris Sabo for those famous brownies! And extra special thanks to Chris and Sam, Chris and Frank, and all you other kind folks who helped to set it up and then clean it up after the dance. Thanks again to Dennis for teaching us a classy step in the Tango!
At break time, Heidi Giezey won the "get into the dance free pass" for a couple. Congratulations Heidi!
It is coming up on that time of the year for our annual meeting and election of Officers for next year. Please be thinking about how you can help to make your dance club even better next year. Maybe you can find a way to spend a little of your time to help manage an activity where people come just to have fun. Wouldn't that be a great way to give back to the club?
This is our standard reminder of the Dues and Fees required by the By Laws. We are now accepting Annual Dues ($10.00/person) for 2010. Why don't you just include your 2010 dues in with your dance fee for this month, and then you won't have to think about it for a whole year! Please include a note that your Annual Dues are included so we get it accounted for correctly. Thanks a whole bunch!
Thanks!
The prospective dates for 2009 dances are: December 19.
NOTE:
The prospective dates for 2010 dances are: January 30, February 27, March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, August 28. The dates for the September through December dances will be dependent on the Clemson football schedule and will be published when those dates are known. Mark your calendars!
We don't want anyone to miss out because they can't find us! The dance location is Zion United Methodist Church, 5708 Highway 187 North, Activity building. Hwy 187 runs between Hwy 76 (near Pendleton) and Hwy 24 (intersection that goes to Portman Marina.) Hello Dancers!
Newsletter - December 2009
It was another one of those turn-around affairs folks! What looked like it might be a very small turn-out, instead became a nicely attended soiree with our usual good food and a super pleasant evening with friends. Ballroom dancers are the nicest people!
Thirty two of you came out for the magic on a lovely Fall evening and you all were treated with a wonderful time of good music and even better dancing! A very big THANK YOU goes to Kathy and Steve Hayasaka for handling the chores of the hosting table with grace and aplomb! Thanks so much you two! I hope we never run out of this "community" spirit because it is what keeps the club on a successful track. And, I hope everyone understands that when we say "Thank You" here, we REALLY mean it!
Our "foodies" came through once again with a great buffet of comestibles that kept us all energized for the evening. Thanks to Elaine, Dennis, Bill, and Ruthann for all that delicious food! Thanks to Dennis for the dance music and for our dance lesson in the Swing. 1-2-3 rock step!
During the break Dennis reminded everyone of the approaching new year and the need to pay 2010 yearly dues, and to think about officer elections. Why don't you just include your yearly dues in your next dance fee and then we can all forget about it till next year. Chris Hanak reminded us that there is a new year list to sign up for hosting the dance each month - please do your part! There was a brief discussion about the proposed mid-week dancing venue - an E-mail is forthcoming with the latest news on that front.
We had a total of 5 door prizes and we pass on special THANKS! to Jack and Patricia DeVroomen for donating 4 packages of flower bulbs from their business! The gift tray of miscellaneous holiday goodies was won by Barbara Budreau. Congratulations Barbara! The bulb packages were won by Lori Cogen, Lou Rainey, Chris Hanak, and Ruthann Thomas - Congratulations all!
